Martians Bring it All Back

BOO.

It's October, and you know what that means - sketches of shit I find startling provided at least once a day all month long! I mostly kept it up last year (that's right, our little sketch blog is over a year old), but I plan on staying on top all this month. I know I'm currently 5 days behind, but that just means I'll be posting some late additions over the next few days (DOUBLE THE FUN!).

Patrick Swayze will also be making a few appearances here and there because I owe about 11 of the drawings I've started in remembrance of him, but I didn't want to push the October fun too far back, so rest assured they'll appear over time. I got me some new pens, I rented some weirdo movies, and I'm pumped. Come back daily!

And kicking off the whole celebration is my Mars Attacks friend above. Ack-Bak!

skitter skitter skitter

I'm still on a Kazuo kick and remembered how utterly terrified I was when the mysterious, seemingly harmless centipede monster in the wonderfully enjoyable Drifting Classroom Vol. 3 lifted up and revealed its underside and gaping mouth - so I decided to draw it, too. Eeeeeeee.

(Sorry, this was supposed to be posted on Friday, October 17, but I was at MMM and couldn't. Cause I was drunk.)

NIGHT BREED! NIGHT BREED!

Paging Dr. Decker!

It's come to my attention that a few month's time off sent the message that we let this site die. Well, we DIDN'T! And we were wrong to leave you in the basement with the lights off for so long. So, dammit, I'm finishing these horror drawings, and the Swayze drawings, and then we're gonna blow your MINDS with other stuff. Stuff with sparkles!

I've never D&D'd

This big bastard (called the Beholder) was on an ad on the back of some comics I had as a kid, and when what appeared to be his cousin showed up in "Big Trouble in Little China," I lost it. That comic ad has stayed with me. I'm pretty sure he's in THIS, too.

The scariest single issue I've ever read?

Sandman #6. Here's the bottom of page 17.

THE WITCHING HOUR #58

Camp Fear is an amazing story!

I want to go to camp there AND I want this guy as my bus driver.

Stand in the Corner

Everybody knows the Blair Witch makes you stand in the corner if she catches you. This scene haunted me out of nowhere weeks after I saw the movie and I still get spooked when I walk into dark empty rooms.

(this shoulda gone up October 3...almost caught up)

Smoke Monster

I had a nightmare about this guy after drinking a LOT one night.

I Heart Tom Atkins

This hot shit right here has appeared in so many FUCKING COOL movies that I can't understand why I haven't seen more people with tattoos of him. You know I love him. Now please go and look at this list, then rent ANYthing from it during the month of October (I recommend this and this) and fall in love, too.

I hate these guys

But my girlfriend likes them from that movie. So here.

Patrick Swayze

Since I was a kid, I've been in love with Patrick Swayze. My sister would watch Dirty Dancing non FUCKING stop and whenever I got the chance, I'd pop Road House into the VCR, so the guy wasn't just in heavy rotation - he WAS the rotation. Shit, I've even had to come to terms with the fact that Dirty Dancing is a damn fun film and has become one of my favorites for all kinds of reasons.

Needless to say, I'm especially moved by his death, I'm gonna post a new picture I've sketched of him each day for the rest of September until I begin my horror-sketch-a-day routine in October. I'm starting below with my favorite scene of his EVER.

Seriously, I was a fan of the guy. Few celebrity deaths have kicked me in the gut this hard.

The Wild Things

Say what you will about the new movie from Spike Jonze (I can't wait to see it!), but when I was in Germany in the 3rd grade, my school went to see a "Where the Wild Things Are" opera/play in a small village and the impressive, homemade costumes scared the fuck out of me. In some yearbook on some shelf somewhere, there's a picture of me all freaked out in the audience and looking for my sister in some seat dozens of rows behind me. This is a drawing of the lead monster from the book.

RASL GIRL

The creepy girl from Jeff Smith's Rasl freaked the lice out of me. But now I don't have lice, so I WIN. Go read Rasl now. There're only 6 issues so far and it's "early seasons of Lost" dope.

Large Marge!

I haven't met a single fucking person who's seen this movie and hasn't said to me that Large Marge freaked them out. Here's a reminder.

mew.

I've only JUST discovered manga horror grandmaster Kazuo Umezu in the last couple years, so do yourself a favor and creep yourself out with some of his work including the two beautiful volumes of Cat-Eyed Boy currently available.

Mr. Mind

After Kingdom Come's Kahn-ing of Captain Marvel, this little guy gives me an icky feeling whenever he shows up - no matter how much I want to see him in a comic screaming, "Flay-Vor Flayve!!!"

(I JUST missed posting this on time on Tuesday, October 21)

Killing When Killing Wasn't Cool

Cinnamon Jack's reflection?

When it comes to creepy comics, Al Columbia isn't only a member - he's the president. And in Fantagraphic's Zero Zero #4, Columbia produced a short story called "I Was Killing When Killing Wasn't Cool" that is so startling and nightmarish in its quiet elegance that it'll stick with you forever. I don't wanna give anything away, but that bastard I drew above was partially responsible for said startling nightmarishness. Columbia JUST released a new book, so GO FUCKING GET IT.

(I meant to post this on October 1. See? Catching up.)

Black Flame

You ain't seen nothin' til you seen your boss roll up in a board meeting to fire everybody with a Black Flame suit on. You need to be reading B.P.R.D., by the way. I'm embarrassed it took me so long.
