The Wild Things

Say what you will about the new movie from Spike Jonze (I can't wait to see it!), but when I was in Germany in the 3rd grade, my school went to see a "Where the Wild Things Are" opera/play in a small village and the impressive, homemade costumes scared the fuck out of me. In some yearbook on some shelf somewhere, there's a picture of me all freaked out in the audience and looking for my sister in some seat dozens of rows behind me. This is a drawing of the lead monster from the book.

(Should have gone up October 4...)

Stand in the Corner

Everybody knows the Blair Witch makes you stand in the corner if she catches you. This scene haunted me out of nowhere weeks after I saw the movie and I still get spooked when I walk into dark empty rooms.

(this shoulda gone up October 3...almost caught up)

Large Marge!

I haven't met a single fucking person who's seen this movie and hasn't said to me that Large Marge freaked them out. Here's a reminder.

(this shoulda gone up October 2)

Killing When Killing Wasn't Cool

Cinnamon Jack's reflection?

When it comes to creepy comics, Al Columbia isn't only a member - he's the president. And in Fantagraphic's Zero Zero #4, Columbia produced a short story called "I Was Killing When Killing Wasn't Cool" that is so startling and nightmarish in its quiet elegance that it'll stick with you forever. I don't wanna give anything away, but that bastard I drew above was partially responsible for said startling nightmarishness. Columbia JUST released a new book, so GO FUCKING GET IT.

(I meant to post this on October 1. See? Catching up.)

I Heart Tom Atkins

This hot shit right here has appeared in so many FUCKING COOL movies that I can't understand why I haven't seen more people with tattoos of him. You know I love him. Now please go and look at this list, then rent ANYthing from it during the month of October (I recommend this and this) and fall in love, too.

Martians Bring it All Back

BOO.

It's October, and you know what that means - sketches of shit I find startling provided at least once a day all month long! I mostly kept it up last year (that's right, our little sketch blog is over a year old), but I plan on staying on top all this month. I know I'm currently 5 days behind, but that just means I'll be posting some late additions over the next few days (DOUBLE THE FUN!).

Patrick Swayze will also be making a few appearances here and there because I owe about 11 of the drawings I've started in remembrance of him, but I didn't want to push the October fun too far back, so rest assured they'll appear over time. I got me some new pens, I rented some weirdo movies, and I'm pumped. Come back daily!

And kicking off the whole celebration is my Mars Attacks friend above. Ack-Bak!

To Wong Foo...

Swayze as the very glamorous cross-dresser Vida in To Wong Foo Thanks for Everything, Julie Newmar. Of course, it co-starred Blade and the Clown from Spawn.

Falling in love with a Stallyn

Here's Swayze falling through the air as Bodhi in Point Break. His falling buddy? Ted Theodore Logan from the future's biggest band, Wyld Stallyns.

Patrick Swayze

Since I was a kid, I've been in love with Patrick Swayze. My sister would watch Dirty Dancing non FUCKING stop and whenever I got the chance, I'd pop Road House into the VCR, so the guy wasn't just in heavy rotation - he WAS the rotation. Shit, I've even had to come to terms with the fact that Dirty Dancing is a damn fun film and has become one of my favorites for all kinds of reasons.

Needless to say, I'm especially moved by his death, I'm gonna post a new picture I've sketched of him each day for the rest of September until I begin my horror-sketch-a-day routine in October. I'm starting below with my favorite scene of his EVER.

Seriously, I was a fan of the guy. Few celebrity deaths have kicked me in the gut this hard.

As Johnny Castle in the Dirty Dancing climax

(Take the 5 minutes to click here and witness this grin-smearing scene in all its glory)
